1.5 billion for humanitarian aid: too many or too few?
Switzerland will pay 1.5 billion francs in humanitarian aid for the period 2007-2011. After the Upper House, even low Qualle agreed to allocate this credit framework. Aid to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should not be strictly humanitarian.
latter has angered the nationalist right Union of Democratic Centre (UDC), which is unacceptable for NGOs, "largely financed by public funds", to intervene in campaigns to vote against the position of the Federal Council . The UDC has alluded in particular to vote on asylum and foreigners in September 2006.
But the Chamber of the people did not want to force NGOs to use only the amounts received for non- politicians. "This would introduce a form of censorship is unacceptable," said an exponent of socialism.
For its part, the Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey noted that the NGOs share the principles of Swiss development cooperation: "neutrality, independence and impartiality." Micheline Calmy-Rey also noted that disasters caused by man or nature are massively increased in recent years.
1.5 billion for humanitarian aid: too little? too? It is necessary to better control the distribution of money to NGOs? Switzerland should also help countries that do not respect democracy? Have your say and send us your comments!
